Strong Faith - What We As Women Learn From Samson

WHY SAMSON?

People have asked why I wrote a book on the Biblical story of Samson, particularly as a woman. The story of Samson has consistently held a fascinating allure within the pages of the Bible. We are drawn to envision an immensely powerful man accomplishing remarkable feats while simultaneously being captivated by Delilah - a seductive and enticing woman.

Samson's narrative intrigues us for various reasons. He embodies incredible strength, and his exploits stand as a testament to human potential under God’s divine influence. Simultaneously, his interactions with women, particularly the beguiling Delilah, weave a thread of complexity into his story. It's this interplay of strength and vulnerability, of power and allure, that makes Samson's account a rich and multi-faceted exploration.

Additionally, his life holds numerous Biblical lessons that we as women can glean and apply to our lives today. Approaching Samson's story through a woman's lens adds a unique dimension. It allows us to delve into the intricacies of the relationships he formed, particularly those with women. This perspective shines a light on the significance of women in Samson's life, showcasing their roles in shaping his journey and influencing his decisions. It prompts us to consider how expectations, emotions, and desires influenced the choices he made, and choices we might make today.

As we analyze Samson's account, we gain insight into the dynamics of how God’s purpose for our lives can become clouded by power and attraction. We see how his encounters with women unveiled layers of his character, revealing vulnerabilities. Samson’s life prompts us to question our own motivations behind actions, the complexities of our emotions, and the lessons embedded in his experiences. In essence, exploring the story of Samson allows us to appreciate the complexity of human relationships, the interplay of strength and fragility, and the intricate dance of power and vulnerability. By studying his life’s choices, we can unearth valuable insights that enrich our understanding of both Samson's journey and the broader themes within God's Word for our lives today. 2 Timothy 3:16-17 says, “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.” (ESV)

GOD HAS A PLAN FOR EACH OF US - OUR VERY OWN RACE

During my upbringing, I participated in track and always found immense satisfaction in crossing the finish line! The blend of fatigue, maximum effort, and a sense of accomplishment was invigorating. I quickly realized that glances at the girl competing against me in the next lane resulted in precious seconds lost on the clock. Similarly, looking over my shoulder to assess the pursuer's position or scrutinizing the stands to identify spectators, even those absent, could lead to losing my balance and valuable time. This experience taught me the importance of remaining focused within my designated lane, maintaining my footing, and exclusively pursuing my own race.

God has an individual race for each of us to embark upon - a divine and extraordinary blueprint for our lives. This race is tailored to our unique qualifications, ensuring we have the capacity to both participate and triumph. God's word tells us in bGod ordained a distinct purpose for Samson, a lane that he was destined to run in throughout his life. A race custom-tailored to his unique abilities and talents. From the very moment of his conception, God equipped him with the essential tools to triumph. Jeremiah 1:5a says, “I knew you before I formed you in your mother’s womb. Before you were born I set you apart…” (NLT) Initially, Samson embraced his race, but eventually, the allure of different women diverted his attention, causing him to veer from his intended lane, lose his footing, and stumble.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN WE LOSE FOOTING IN OUR RACE?

Many people are not aware that Samson was married prior to his entanglement with Delilah. Samson loved his wife and her subsequent betrayal and tragic demise shattered his heart. This experience permanently transformed his perception of women. First, as instruments of pleasure and second, as a means to shield his heart which would prevent him from uncovering an amazing relationship rooted in God's plan for him. Throughout most of Samson’s life, while he possessed sight, he remained blind to the kind of woman God could offer him.

Samson was unwilling to undergo another personal loss. Delilah's intentions were clearly harmful, and deep down, he must have recognized them. His mistake was believing his strength alone could navigate the situation. Delilah consistently attacked Samson in his moments of slumber, seizing his vulnerability. Each time he fell asleep, not realizing that vulnerability left him exposed, Samson rested his head in her lap mistaking it for a sanctuary. Sometimes we misinterpret a place of rest as a safe refuge. Our adversary is keenly aware of this and capitalizes on our weariness, presenting what seems like a secure haven.

Eventually, Samson grew weary of the games and succumbed to Delilah's schemes. He relinquished his divine covenant from God for stolen, fleeting moments with her. Before he lost his hair, he lost his way. As he sacrificed his covenant and God withdrew his presence, Samson’s strength dissipated. Consequently, his adversaries captured him with ease.

GOD IS MERCIFUL

Samson failed to heal from the past hurt with his wife or surrender his pain to God, choosing instead to confront the world in his own might. However, relying solely on his own strength and straying from his lane and race invariably led to his downfall.

Samson presumed that God’s divine grace and mercy would perpetually shield him, yet his testing of God exceeded its limits. Interestingly, two exceptional men in the Bible—Samson, the mightiest, and Solomon, the wisest—both succumbed to their desires and lusts for women. The amazing news is God is merciful. From Samson's narrative, we learn that it is not too late to start over - to line back up at the starting line to run our race.

Ultimately, Samson humbly repented and acknowledged his reliance on God. Notably, he fulfilled the angel's prophetic announcement about his purpose even in his final moments. He initiated the rescue of Israel from the Philistines. Samson’s demise marked a transformation of his failure and defeat into triumph. He earned a place in Hebrews 11:32, recognized as a devoted servant of the Lord and an inductee into God's "Hall of Faith.”
